As Chiropractors, we encounter numerous individuals on a daily basis who suffer from lower back pain. Back pain is ubiquitous – 8/10 people will experience it in their lifetime.
It has significant financial costs and is challenging for conventional healthcare to treat with over the counter or prescribed drugs.
Pilates for Chronic Low Back Pain
Pilates is an excellent modality to combat chronic lower back pain in combination with chiropractic care and intervention.
The slow pace of the exercises, the emphasis on proper breathing and the focus on alignment make Pilates a practice that is both therapeutic and strengthening in design but has to be practiced on a regular basis to achieve the desired results of a pain free back.
Pilates for Relief
The routine that is presented in my office is made up of Classic Pilates exercises with modifications as well as simple stretches to get the patient started.
It is indisputable that each and every body is different and that are various causes and origins of back pain.
However, working with people of all ages and limitations over the past four years, I have discovered my “go-to” exercises to alleviate discomfort in most of my patients.
There are five Pilates exercises which have been modified to remedy the common problem of back pain. Each exercise is demonstrated in the practice and a copy of the exercise program to be taken home.
If the patient requires a more strenuous and complex Pilates or exercise routine, the patient will be referred to the appropriate private Pilates instructor or a biokineticist.
Before you start any exercise program it is advised that you consult your chiropractor to establish the root cause of your back pain. Once a full medical history is taken and an orthopaedic examination has been conducted, then advice on the correct exercise methods can be given.
